When to book
For the most sought-after tasting-menu restaurants, book as soon as your dates are fixed, particularly for December and January. Many require a card deposit or prepayment with strict cancellation terms. Lunch is often easier to secure than dinner, and on wine farms it is usually the better experience.
Dress
Cape Town is relaxed: smart-casual works almost everywhere. Bring a layer: evenings can be cool and windy even in summer.
Tipping and payment
A gratuity of around 10 to 15% is customary where service is not already included; check the bill. Cards are widely accepted. See currency and tipping.
Wine
Wine lists are a highlight and good value by international standards. Some restaurants allow you to bring your own bottle for a corkage fee; ask when booking.
Dietary needs
State allergies and preferences at booking; kitchens at this level are used to them.
Sources and method. Restaurants listed here were checked as operating against 2025–2026 public sources, including the 2026 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards list (News24, 23 March 2026), the 2025 Eat Out awards list (News24, 31 March 2025), restaurant and estate websites, and the V&A Waterfront's official dining pages. Descriptions are editorial summaries, not reviews: we publish no star ratings or customer reviews of our own. Price indications are approximate tiers only (R = casual → RRRR = tasting-menu territory) and change often; always check the restaurant directly. Last checked: October 2026.
