When to visit Cape Town, month by month

Cape Town's high season runs roughly October to February. But every month has a reason to go.

The short answer

For beaches, long evenings and wine-farm lunches, travel November to March. For whales, choose September to October. For value and moody beauty, consider the winter months. The visitor season peaks from October to February, which is also when the best villas and restaurants book out.

MarchWarm, slightly calmer winds, harvest season; a favourite month for those who know the Cape.
AprilAutumn: mild days, golden vineyards, quieter after Easter.
MayCooler and greener; first winter rain; good value.
JuneWinter: rain fronts alternate with crisp, clear days. Whale season begins on the Overberg coast.
JulyMid-winter. Cosy wine-farm fireplaces, low season rates; cableway maintenance often scheduled in this period (check).
AugustLate winter; West Coast and Namaqualand wildflowers start (best Aug–Sep, dependent on rain).
SeptemberSpring. Whale watching typically excellent; wildflowers; days warming.
OctoberShoulder-to-peak. Whales still around, the Hermanus whale festival is usually late Sep/early Oct; season builds.
NovemberEarly summer, long days, lighter crowds than December; Kirstenbosch concerts start (check programme).
DecemberFestive peak: highest demand, highest rates, minimum stays at villas; book many months ahead.

Wind and weather

The summer south-easter clears the air but can close the cableway and roughen the sea. Winter brings rain fronts from the Atlantic, with clear, still days between them. Always leave weather-flexible days in your plan.
