A shared history

Cape Town began in 1652 as a Dutch East India Company (VOC) supply station. Visit the Company's Garden and the Castle of Good Hope, notice the Cape Dutch gables on the wine estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and hear Afrikaans, a language that grew from Dutch, all around you. A thoughtful guide will also tell the harder parts of that history, including slavery and dispossession; Bo-Kaap and Robben Island are essential.

Getting there

KLM has offered direct Amsterdam–Cape Town flights; check current schedules. Cape Town is only one hour ahead of the Netherlands during Dutch winter time, and on the same time in summer.

Best for Dutch travellers

A winter escape between November and March, ideally a fly-drive-with-chauffeur combining the city, the Winelands and the Garden Route or Hermanus.
