Table Mountain, privately

The flat-topped mountain is the city's compass. Seeing it well is mostly a matter of timing, wind and who you go with.

Why it matters

Table Mountain sits inside Table Mountain National Park and is part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage property. From the summit plateau you see the City Bowl, Robben Island, the Twelve Apostles and, on a clear day, the length of the peninsula. It is the one experience almost every first-time visitor wants, which is exactly why it rewards a little planning.

The cableway: how to do it without the queue

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway runs from Tafelberg Road. Two rules make the difference: buy timed tickets online in advance, and go early or late. The cableway closes when the wind is up, and in summer the south-easter (locally, the "Cape Doctor") can shut it at short notice, so build a flexible morning into the first days of your trip rather than fixing it on the last. The cableway also takes an annual maintenance break, usually in the quieter winter months: check the official schedule before you book flights around it.

Insider pattern: keep two possible "mountain mornings" in your itinerary. Your driver or concierge watches the forecast and the cableway status, and you go on whichever morning is clear.

Private guided hikes

For fit travellers a guided ascent is far more memorable than the cable car. Platteklip Gorge is the direct (steep) route; Skeleton Gorge from Kirstenbosch is shaded and beautiful; India Venster is for confident scramblers only. A private, registered mountain guide sets the pace, handles the weather calls and can arrange for you to ride the cableway down. Never hike alone, and start early in summer heat.

Seeing it from above or below

A helicopter flight over the Atlantic Seaboard gives the mountain in profile, with Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles; see our helicopter guide. For sundowners, Signal Hill and the Camps Bay beachfront both frame the western face beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go up Table Mountain?

Early morning or late afternoon on a clear, calm day. Keep two flexible slots in your itinerary because wind can close the cableway at short notice.

Do I need to book the cableway in advance?

Booking timed tickets online in advance is strongly recommended in peak season (roughly October to February).

Can I hike up Table Mountain with a private guide?

Yes. Registered private mountain guides lead routes such as Platteklip Gorge and Skeleton Gorge and can tailor pace and route to your fitness.
