What to expect
Boulders, near Simon's Town, is part of Table Mountain National Park and protects a colony of African penguins, a species now classified as critically endangered. Boardwalks lead to viewing platforms at Foxy Beach, and the adjacent Boulders Beach section allows (seasonally crowded) swimming among the granite boulders, sometimes with penguins nearby.
Timing
Penguins are present year-round. Go early to beat the tour coaches, especially between December and February. Your private driver can slot Boulders at the start or end of a peninsula day to avoid the midday peak.
Responsible viewing
- Never touch or feed the penguins and keep a respectful distance.
- No drones.
- Pay the SANParks conservation fee at the entrance; it supports the colony.
