Cape Point & the peninsula drive

One of the world's great coastal days: cliffs, lighthouses, penguins and a long lunch, ideally with a private driver-guide.

The classic loop

The peninsula loop runs south from the city along the Atlantic Seaboard, over Chapman's Peak Drive (a toll road carved into the cliffs above Hout Bay), down to the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, and back along the False Bay side via Simon's Town and Boulders Beach. Done properly it is a full day of eight to ten hours.

Suggested rhythm

  1. Morning: Camps Bay and Llandudno viewpoints, then Chapman's Peak Drive while the light is soft. Chapman's Peak can close after heavy rain or rockfall risk, so your driver will check before setting off.
  2. Midday: Cape Point. Ride the Flying Dutchman funicular or walk up to the old lighthouse, then the short trail to the Cape of Good Hope sign. Watch for baboons and keep food out of sight.
  3. Afternoon: Boulders Beach penguins (see our Boulders guide), then a slow seafood lunch or early dinner in Simon's Town or Kalk Bay.

Why go private

Group coaches follow a fixed clock. A private driver-guide reverses the loop when the wind is wrong, times Boulders before the coaches, waits while you swim at a tidal pool, and knows which viewpoint is worth the stop that day. For a guided version with everything arranged, see Cape Point private tours.

Self-drive?

It is entirely possible to self-drive (South Africa drives on the left), but distances, parking and park-gate queues in high season make a driver the more relaxing option for most of our readers. See getting around.
