What it is
Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road of about 9 km with 114 curves, cut into the mountainside between Hout Bay and Noordhoek on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula. It is the most dramatic way to start (or finish) a Cape Point day.
Timing and closures
The road can close at short notice for rockfall risk, heavy rain, strong wind or maintenance. Check the official live status at chapmanspeakdrive.co.za on the morning you go; if it is shut, the inland route via Constantia Nek or Ou Kaapse Weg still gets you to the southern peninsula. Late afternoon light on the Hout Bay side is spectacular; mornings are quieter.
Doing it well
- Use the marked viewpoints and picnic spots only; do not stop on bends.
- A toll is payable (check the current tariff on the official site); a private driver handles this for you.
- Cyclists use the road heavily on weekend mornings; drive patiently.
